Brecks Vineyard has been a long time in the planning...

An exciting new venture for our rural family farm. The Young family had always thought that a vineyard could be feasible as the geographical location, topography and soil type all lend themselves to viticulture. Diversification projects need to be approached with caution and it was felt that a vineyard could sensibly fit into the existing farming operations without material change.  After consulting several experts and having a full feasibility study it was decided to go ahead and invest – Brecks Vineyard was born.

In the first year the land was prepared to provide the ideal conditions for the vines to put down strong roots in the soil and subsoil. There is a solid base of chalk which it is hoped shows signs of being similar to the Champagne region of France.  The chalk allows the vine roots to dig freely and deeply, with the ability to hold moisture like a sponge while at the same time allowing excess to drain away.  The plan is to harvest our first grapes in 2026 and, by involving two established wine producers with which supply contracts are being drawn up, production will ramp up from then.

The decision was taken to grow a variety of white grapes primarily for the sparkling market although still white wine could also be produced.  As a point of difference and with sustainability in mind both hybrid (Piwi) and traditional varieties have been planted.  The Piwi varieties demonstrate high resistance to fungal diseases which will reduce the use of pesticides. They also make some lovely wine.  Blocks of Piwis and traditional have been spread throughout the vineyard to provide disease breaks.
